Moonveil — TarnishedGuide

Katana

Overview

Moonveil is the quintessential mage-samurai weapon, combining katana speed with sorcerer-range pressure. Transient Moonlight fires a magic projectile at range (light attack) or a wide horizontal arc (heavy attack), both with incredible speed, low FP cost, and devastating stagger damage. Moonveil has been a top-tier choice since launch, dominating both PvE and PvP with its unmatched versatility.

Stats & Scaling

Requires STR 12, DEX 18, INT 23. At max upgrade (+10 Somber), scaling becomes STR E, DEX C, INT B.

How to Get Moonveil

  1. Travel to Gael Tunnel, located on the border between Limgrave and Caelid near the Rotview Balcony Site of Grace.
  2. Enter the tunnel and proceed through the mine. Watch for the giant hands and miners along the way.
  3. Descend to the boss fog at the bottom of the tunnel. The boss is the Magma Wyrm.
  4. Defeat the Magma Wyrm — its lava attacks cover large areas, so stay close to its sides and avoid the mouth.
  5. Moonveil is awarded upon defeating the Magma Wyrm. No additional steps required.

Moveset & Skill

Transient Moonlight (8-12 FP)

Transient Moonlight sheathes the blade and performs an iaijutsu-style slash. The light attack fires a vertical magic wave projectile with excellent range. The heavy attack fires a horizontal wave that hits in a wide arc. Both do magic damage and build frostbite buildup. The heavy version deals more stagger damage and is ideal for stance-breaking bosses. The skill's speed makes it difficult to punish in PvP.

Best Builds

Mage Build

INT 80 — Max sorcery damage, Moonveil as melee backup with Scholar's Armament

Intelligence Build

INT 60 — Balanced INT with 40 Vigor, 25 Endurance, 20 Mind

Spellblade Build

INT 50 / DEX 40 — Hybrid melee-caster using Carian Slicer and Moonveil

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Insane skill speed — one of the fastest weapon skills in the game
  • Powerful ranged option for a melee weapon
  • Frostbite buildup adds extra damage on procs
  • Low FP cost per use (8-12 FP)

Cons

  • Split magic/physical damage reduces effective AR against high-magic-defense enemies
  • INT requirement (23) locks out non-intelligence builds
  • Predictable in PvP — skilled players can dodge Transient Moonlight on reaction
  • Less effective in closed quarters where the projectile can hit walls

Pro Tip

Moonveil's heavy Transient Moonlight does significantly more stagger damage than the light version — use heavy attacks to stance-break bosses in 3-4 hits, then follow with a critical riposte for massive damage.
