Phase 1 Strategy — Grafted Axe Combos
Godrick's phase 1 is defined by his massive grafted axe and mechanical arm. His standard combo is a wide horizontal sweep followed by an overhead slam — roll into the sweep (toward his back) to position for 2-3 counter-attacks. The Storm Attack is his most dangerous move: he spins his axe around himself before creating a wind vortex AOE. Sprint away when you see him begin the spin animation. His stomp attack has a small AOE with a clear tell (he raises one leg). Fextralife's Godrick guide has detailed attack patterns and frame data.
Phase 2 — Dragon Head Graft
At approximately 60% HP, Godrick severs his own arm and grafts a dragon head onto the stump. This dramatically changes his moveset: the dragon head spews fire in a sweeping arc from his left to right. Roll through the fire toward his back for a generous punish window of about 2 seconds. He also gains a lunging fire-bite attack that tracks player movement — dodge sideways at the last moment. The dragon head will occasionally breathe fire downward while Godrick does melee attacks, creating overlapping AOE zones. Wikipedia's Elden Ring lore explains Godrick's obsession with grafting and his place in the shardbearer lineage.
Best Equipment and Stats
Recommended level 30-40 with a +4 to +6 weapon. Fire damage is effective against Godrick — he has lower fire resistance than other elements. Use the Flame Sling incantation or a fire-infused broadsword for bonus damage. Equip the Flamedrake Talisman to mitigate his phase 2 fire breath. For melee builds, a striking weapon like the Morningstar deals excellent poise damage and can stagger him within 4-5 charged attacks. Sorcerers should use Glintstone Pebble or Rock Sling; Godrick's large hitbox makes him vulnerable to projectile spells.
NPC Summons and Spirit Ashes
Nepheli Loux's summon sign is available directly outside the boss door — her tanky AI and heavy attacks draw aggro effectively. Combined with the Jellyfish Spirit Ash (found in Stormhill Shack), you can create a 3v1 scenario that trivializes the fight. The Lone Wolf Ashes are also strong at this stage of the game. If you want a true solo challenge, Godrick's moveset is designed to be learnable without summons; his attacks are slow enough to reaction-roll, unlike later bosses with delayed timings.
Stormveil Castle — Boss Run-Back
The run to Godrick is mercifully short once you unlock the Liftside Chamber grace. From the Secluded Cell grace, exit the room, turn right past the sleeping exiled soldier, climb the ladder, cross the wooden bridge (watch for the ballista), and enter the fog wall. This route takes approximately 30 seconds. Alternatively, using the main courtyard route lets you summon Nepheli Loux but requires defeating a banished knight. The secluded cell route is strongly recommended for repeated attempts as it avoids all combat before the boss fog.
Rewards and Great Rune
Defeating Godrick rewards 20,000 runes, the Great Rune of Godrick, and Godrick's Remembrance. The Great Rune raises all attributes by 5 when equipped and activated with a Rune Arc — one of the best early-game boosts available. The Remembrance can be exchanged for the Axe of Godrick or the Grafted Dragon fist weapon. Godrick's Great Rune is particularly valuable for low-level characters as the +5 to all stats unlocks equipment requirements without investing levels. Activate the Great Rune at the Divine Tower of Limgrave before using it.
Location and Run-Back Optimization
Godrick the Grafted sits at the throne of Stormveil Castle, the Legacy Dungeon of Limgrave. The most efficient run-back is from the Secluded Cell grace site: exit the room, turn right past the sleeping exiled soldier, climb the ladder, cross the wooden bridge while watching for the ballista fire, and enter the boss fog. This route takes roughly 30 seconds with no required combat. Alternative routes include approaching through the main courtyard, which allows you to summon Nepheli Loux but requires dispatching the Banished Knight patrol. The Liftside Chamber grace provides a middle ground with elevator access but a longer path. Once inside the arena, Godrick begins with a short monologue about grafting before becoming hostile, giving you time to apply buffs.
Stormveil Castle contains multiple hidden paths and items worth collecting before facing Godrick. The Rusty Key allows access to the armory with the Banished Knight armor set. Rogier the sorcerer's summon sign is available outside the boss door if you speak to him in the chapel. Gostoc, the gatekeeper who guides you through Stormveil's hidden paths, will appear in the boss arena during the fight and can be summoned for assistance — though he does minimal damage. The Iron Whetblade found in Stormveil enables the Heavy, Keen, and Quality affinities for Ashes of War. Consider exploring Stormveil thoroughly before engaging Godrick, as the castle contains multiple upgrade materials that will boost your weapon level before the fight.
Lore — The Grafted Lord's Ambition
Godrick is a direct descendant of Godfrey the First Elden Lord, making him a member of the Golden Lineage. However, unlike his ancestors who were mighty warriors capable of wielding the Elden Ring, Godrick was born weak and physically unremarkable. His solution to this inadequacy was grafting — the practice of attaching body parts from fallen warriors and even beasts to himself. The massive multi-limbed form you fight is the result of countless graftings, with arms, legs, and even a dragon head stitched onto his body. His obsession with grafting stems from his desperate desire to be worthy of his lineage. The Grafted Greatsword found in the Chapel of Anticipation, guarded by the Grafted Scion, represents Godrick's ambition: a massive sword assembled from the blades of lesser warriors, symbolizing his belief that strength can be accumulated from others rather than earned.
Godrick's grafting practices have made him the subject of contempt among the other demigods. Malenia famously dismissed him by saying "Thou art but a wretch" during the Shattering war. Despite his weakness, Godrick managed to survive the Shattering by hiding in Stormveil Castle and building an army of grafted soldiers, banished knights, and exiled warriors. His dragon head graft, acquired from a defeated ancient dragon, represents his greatest achievement and symbolizes his ambition to match the power of the dragonlord Fortissax. The Stormveil Castle itself serves as Godrick's throne and experimental laboratory, where his surgeons continue developing new grafting techniques on living subjects. Godrick's Great Rune, which raises all attributes by 5, ironically makes him more useful dead than alive — his most valuable contribution to the Tarnished is the stat boost from his rune.
Gostoc and the Secret Path
Gostoc is the gatekeeper of Stormveil who pretends to help you navigate the castle while secretly picking your pockets whenever you take damage. If you speak to him at the main gate, he offers to open a secret path into the castle. Throughout the level, Gostoc can be found lurking behind corners, and defeating Godrick causes him to appear in the throne room where he stamps on Godrick's head repeatedly. Gostoc's quest has multiple outcomes: you can kill him immediately for 2,000 runes and the Rusty Key, or spare him to unlock his hidden merchant inventory — he eventually sells the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, one of only 13 in the game. To access his full inventory, you must not kill him and must ensure he survives through Godrick's defeat.
The secret path through Stormveil that Gostoc reveals is faster than the main route but leads past several exiled soldiers and a Giants' Mounted Knight. Use the side path with Gostoc's guidance to find the Stormhawk Deenh spirit ash, a melee-range ancestral follower that applies Stormhawk's agility buff to the player. The hidden merchant in Stormveil's cellars is Nepheli Loux's adoptive father, Gideon Ofnir, who provides context about Godrick's grafting. After Godrick's defeat, return to the throne room to find Gostoc and determine his fate. The Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone from Gostoc's shop requires 10,000 runes but is essential for maxing out a special weapon. Gostoc's presence adds moral complexity to Stormveil — he is both exploiter and victim, a survivor in a castle ruled by a mad tyrant.
Advanced Combat Techniques for Low-Level Runs
Godrick is one of the most popular bosses for low-level challenge runs due to his slow attacks and consistent punish windows. At level 20-25, the most reliable strategy is to use the Dragonwound Grease, which increases damage against ancient dragon-type enemies and works on Godrick's phase 2 dragon head. The Uchigatana found at the Death-Touched Catacombs in Limgrave provides innate bleed buildup that procs 3-4 times in a normal fight, dealing 15% total HP damage. Combined with the Bloody Slash ash of war, the bleed procs accelerate significantly. For shield users, the Brass Shield dropped by Godrick Soldiers provides 100% physical block with 56 guard boost, allowing you to block his wind-up attacks without chip damage. The Cipher Pata, a faith-based fist weapon found in Roundtable Hold, deals pure holy damage that bypasses shields.
The Physick Flask combinations for low-level Godrick kills are crucial. The Stonebarb Cracked Tear increases stance damage by 30% for 30 seconds, enabling 3 charged attack stance breaks instead of 5. The Crimsonburst Crystal Tear provides 7 HP per second regeneration for 3 minutes, reducing flask usage during extended fights. For magic builds, the Night Sorceries — Night Comet and Night Shard — are invisible to NPC AI, meaning Godrick will not attempt to dodge them. Rock Sling, found in the Street of Sages Ruins in Caelid, deals physical damage that bypasses his magic resistance. For incantation users, Flame Sling and Catch Flame consistently stagger Godrick due to their high poise damage. The recommended talisman loadout for low-level runs includes the Radagon's Scarseal for +5 stats, the Green Turtle Talisman for stamina recovery, the Claw Talisman for jump attack damage, and the Dragoncrest Shield Talisman for physical defense.
